Have you planned a weekend in the mountains or a holiday away from home? Carrying your bike properly is crucial to travel safely and without breaking the road code.
Choose the right bike carrier
There are different types of bike carriers for cars:
- From the roof: cheaper, but be careful at the height in covered parking spaces.
- Rear (hook or door): practical and fast to mount, but look at the visibility of the plate.
- Da traino: stable and safe, but requires an approved tow hook. Make sure the bike carrier is compatible with your vehicle and the type of bike to carry (e-bike, MTB, road, ...).
The regulations to be complied with
- Bicycles must not cover lights and plates: if this happens, it is mandatory to install an additional plate.
- The load shall not exceed the width of the car.
- If the rear bike carrier is installed, you must periodically check that the straps are well secured.
Protect your bike (and car)
Use rubber belts to avoid scratches on the frame and protections between bikes and body shop. If you carry the bike inside the car, dismount the wheels and cover the most delicate parts.
Traveling with your bike doesn't have to be a complication. With some care you can leave calm and focus only on what matters: your next ride.
